Cement is manufactured by heating and cooling down raw materials. Limestone is the primary mineral used in its creation. And it is present in extreme amounts. A lot of chemical reactions are involved. The stone-like aggregates are formed. They are crushed and then mixed with elements such as gypsum to create cement. Read below to understand comprehensively the manufacturing process of cement.
The most important cement raw materials are Clay, iron ore, limestone, marl, chalk, and shale. All the required materials and minerals are extracted from the earth. They are mined, refined and grind. After going through chemical processes, heating & cooling, these are transformed into main cement ingredients.
Now the raw materials/ ingredients of cement are processed. Heavy machinery is used to crush these elements. This machine is called a crusher. It breaks down these compounds into tiny sizes. Likewise, they are transformed into mixers for blending them into a uniform paste. At this stage, the quality control team examine if the cement ingredients are in the right proportion. If they give a green signal, it is progressed to the next step, else required fixing is done.
In this cement manufacturing step, the blend is set up for heating. This mixture is then heated at a temperature of 1,450° Celsius. It is said that this degree is even higher than the volcanic lava. Once it is liquefied, the chemical reactions proceed. Subsequently, the round-shaped marble-like stones are formed when cooled. These are called ‘clinkers’.
At this stage, the clinkers are crushed. A powder-like compound is formed which we call ‘Cement’. Now the manufacturers add gypsum to the cement powder. It is proportional to the setting pace of the cement. Other additives such as slag and fly ash are also added. It determines the properties of cement. There is a long list of additives used by the workers to enhance the strength and stability of the binding material.
The process of cement manufacturing is not done yet. Strength, texture, workability, setting time specific gravity etc are assured. For that, the cement is carefully tested. It is the final testing. After passing, the cement is all set for transportation, packaging and serving its part in architecture. The required modifications are done by the professionals if the product fails at testing. The experts will make a list of what is lacking. In this way, the cement production firms follow the orders and go through quality checks until perfect cement is produced.
Now, the freshly produced cement is stored in silos. A silo is a tall & spacious chamber used to store a good. These large quantity containers keep the product until it is packed. After packaging, the bags are stored as pallets. These are stored in safe and moisture-resistant spots. From here the cement distributors/ suppliers collect the commodity.
The Conclusion
Today, we learnt the Cement Manufacturing Process Step By Step. Now we are aware of How Cement Is Made. This binding element plays an important role in infrastructure development. With the right expertise, and the equipment, the cement production process can become quicker. With the innovation and right knowledge implementation, the quality can be further improved. It will result into robust buildings construction.
